What to Do While You Wait
- If a child, a vulnerable adult or a pet is locked inside a vehicle, call 911 first. Emergency services should be your first call when someone could be in danger.
- Stay somewhere safe and visible. At night, wait in a well-lit area or with a neighbor.
- Check every other door and window you are allowed to open, but do not force anything; a broken window or frame usually costs far more to fix than a lockout service call.
- If you are in a parking lot or roadside, keep clear of traffic.
What to Tell Us When You Call
A few details help us arrive prepared:
- Your exact location, including the community and any landmark.
- What you are locked out of: home, business or vehicle.
- For vehicles, the make, model and year.
- Whether the keys are locked inside, lost or broken in the lock.
To protect you and your property, a reputable locksmith will ask you to show that you live at the address or own the vehicle before or after opening it, for example with a photo ID showing the address, a lease or the vehicle registration. Please have it handy.
Frozen and Damaged Locks in Wisconsin Winters
Not every lockout involves lost keys. In cold weather, moisture inside a lock can freeze and stop the key from turning. Avoid pouring hot water on a frozen lock, since it can refreeze deeper inside the mechanism, and never force the key, because a snapped key turns a frozen lock into a real lockout. A lock de-icer or gently warming the key usually helps. If the key still will not turn, or it breaks off in the cylinder, give us a call and we can extract it and get the lock working again.
How to Avoid the Next Lockout
- Keep a spare key with someone you trust instead of hiding it outside. We can cut duplicate keys for you.
- Fix sticky locks early. A key that needs jiggling today may break off in the lock tomorrow. Our lock repair service catches these problems before they strand you.
