What We Look At
Burglars usually look for the quickest, quietest way in. An assessment focuses on those same weak points:
- Exterior doors: lock type and condition, deadbolt throw, door and frame strength, and how well strike plates are secured.
- Secondary entrances: back doors, side doors, service doors and the door between an attached garage and the house.
- Sliding doors and windows: latches, secondary locks and how easily they could be forced or lifted.
- Key control: how many keys exist, who holds them and whether it is time to rekey or move to a master key system.
- Safes and valuables: whether cash, records and valuables are stored properly, and whether a safe is anchored and suited to what it holds.
- Visibility and lighting: entry points hidden by shrubs, fences or darkness.
